1964 was the busiest year for cargo in London with 62.3 million tonnes followed by 1968 at 62m.A decrease began in 1975 to 45.6m. 1990 saw an increase again to 54million and 2007 was 52.7million tonnes.

“CABBAGE!” was the shout that went up by dockers when a dock policeman was spotted and cigarettes had to be extinguished.  Smoking in the docks was strictly prohibited
